Promoting your volunteer opportunities online

So you have your event ready to go, but now you need to find some volunteers to help everything go smoothly. How do you find volunteers in your area to help with your event? You could take out expensive advertisements with the local media outlets, but that probably isn’t within most organizations’ budgets. There are several free solutions out there that you can take advantage of right from your computer.

Post your event online
Check out the following sites that let you post information about your volunteer event:

Find local volunteer groups
Many cities have organizations that have volunteers on stand-by waiting to offer their services to your cause. Here are a few examples:

Utilize convention and visitors bureaus
Many convention and visitors bureaus have event calendars specific to local events which helps not only local residents but also out of town visitors. They might also be able to guide you to other local resources to help promote your event and find volunteers. Here are a few examples:

List your event in the community calendar section of your local TV, Radio, and newspaper
Many media outlets have a community calendar which lets organizations post their event information. Usually this includes a website listing as well as an on-the-air spot or listed in the newspaper. Most stations require listings to be submitted 3-4 weeks in advance to ensure they get published. Here are a few examples:

Newspaper – Indy Star | Radio – 93.1 WIBC | TV – WISH 8

San Francisco
Newspaper – San Francisco Chronicle | Radio – 102.9 KBLX | TV – ABC 7

Tampa Bay
Newspaper – Tampa Bay Online | Radio – 970 WFLA | TV – WFTS

Hopefully these tips will help find the volunteers you need to make your next event a successful one! If you have any additional tips, please post your comments below. Thanks!
